In a small Zealand village, where everything seems to be idyllic, lives the seamstress Bolette Jensen, a bold woman who has had her share of bitter experiences and is now feared for her sharp tongue. Bolette tends to speak her mind without mincing words, and since the truth is, as is well known, unheard of, she is not particularly liked by the parish authorities, the most prominent of whom is the parish council chairman Peter Enevoldsen. Bolette is given a serious task when the young, beautiful Sofie is about to have a baby, and Bolette immediately takes care of the unhappy girl and promises that she will probably walk up the aisle with her Karl.

Christensen is the caretaker of a property in the inner city. He is a bachelor and has taken in a poor little girl. The only one who doesn't join in the joke is the pretty Mette Madsen. She thinks her friends are frivolous and stupid. She is incapable of exerting any attraction on men. It becomes too much for Mette.

Ole Eriksen is a young engineer with lots of good ideas and a lot of courage. That's why it's all the more frustrating that his immediate boss doesn't care about innovation or progress, and that the CEO is more interested in women than business. In the end, Ole can't take it anymore and quits, thereby arousing his sweet wife's concerns. But Ole has a plan...

Baldur Justesen is the owner of an ice cream parlor in a Copenhagen suburb. He is a smooth and unassuming man who works hard to keep it running. It is not quite that easy. A man who works all day in an ice cream parlor can also need some diversion, and it is Baldur Justesen's greatest joy to sing in the choir of the "Lyren" singing association.

Peter Andersen is an agent. Neither a wholesaler nor a representative, but simply an agent. Unlike his wife, he has no honorable ambitions. He is an honest, peaceful and self-sufficient person who has dragged his whole life like a draft ox, whipped forward by a boss who constantly demands results, and by a family who still demands money for pleasures.

A large Danish provincial town in the year 1888. Headmaster Wang's wife needs recreation, and the kind headmaster sends her and his youngest daughter Emma to Fanø. In his solitude, he delves into his youth memories and invents, among other things, a "Nordic tragedy", which he wrote during his student days and gave the proud title "Erik Ejegod's Pilgrimage". A theatre director encourages the headmaster to have the play performed at the theatre.
