All of them are individuals who, on a warm summer day, suddenly find themselves in the midst of war.

France Simčič is a gentleman who moves into the Veselje home for the elderly. He meets Majda, who lives in her own world.

The film is a portrait of the Novak family: the results of the marriage between the farmer Novak and a townswoman of German descent, their children and their tragic fates and the life of Andrej - the Novaks' only surviving child. Andrej recalls the days of his youth and the wartime years, in which the family slowly breaks up due to different political beliefs and world-outlooks. In addition to the loss of many members of his family, Andrej must also face the fact that his father has disowned him and his girlfriend left him. Despite all, however, he keeps alive his hopes of a better future, which, to him, is embodied by the beautiful Iza.

All his life, this uncompromising fighter for justice and equality strived to reconcile the irreconcilable: Christian practice and international socialism. The main protagonists of the film are members of the gypsy family Mirga. Lutvija Belmondo Mirga narrates a story about four generations. Belmondo is the central character of the film, a gypsy king, who decided to establish his own gypsy village. He names it Shanghai. Will he protect his own family or is he going to sacrifice his personal happiness for business ambitions?

Due to misunderstanding and hard life, a man divorces his wife and leaves the city. He comes to a new environment, meeting new people and new wife. Crucified between two worlds, he does everything to bring her two sons on the right track, and getting on with his own life. Lost in that space, powerless to change things significantly, he commits murder.
