To build a house and feed his family, Deles went to the mountain camps as a shepherd. With all sorts of promises and temptations, local businessmen gradually connected Deles to their machinations — and the young shepherd very soon built a huge house, bought a car, found prosperity and lost his family.

The year is 1929. The construction of a railway connecting Central Asia and Siberia is in full swing in Kazakhstan. The writer Bektas-agha, arriving in his native village, remembers his childhood: his mother died early, his careless father, who married the beautiful Kulimbala, the teacher Sagatbai. It was a time of collectivization. Bai and his henchmen, playing on the feelings of people expecting hunger, persuaded the collective farmers to barytma — stealing the herd from the neighbors. The members of the cell offered to punish all the perpetrators, but they made up the majority of the residents of the village. The teacher convinced that it is impossible to punish the people for their darkness, it is necessary to find the instigators. So, overcoming their illiteracy, the resistance of the Bay bandits, the collective farmers gradually improved their lives.

A tiny Kyrgyz aul in the mountains is slated for demolition, and its people must move to a collective farm. Young shepherd Kanat sets out for the city to study, but after being deceived, he chooses to stay, realizing he must first learn the art of living among people. The village elders, guided by timeless moral values, shape the destinies of the characters, rooted in a deep sense of belonging and communal spirit.

This story tells how a group of livestock handlers took upon themselves a human and civic duty to undertake a long and extremely difficult journey along the roads of a war that was not yet fully over.

The events take place during the Great Patriotic War. The mother is illiterate, unable to read or write, but since the only way to stay informed is to wait for and read letters from the front, she begins to teach herself and eventually becomes a postwoman. More than once, she has to deliver tragic news to other families, and she takes upon herself the burden of compassion for the mothers, understanding their grief and trying to ease it.
