Helena, a beautiful school teacher in a countryside hamlet is just going to marry her childhood friend Erkki, but a day before the wedding her first love Jari arrives to the scene.

1892. Vappu Biörcke and Kaarlo Härkönen get to know each other during the summer in the countryside at the birthday of Vappu Jalle-sedä. In Helsinki, the young people continue their courtship under the supervision of Vapu's aunt, Moster Mella. After loosing his family in the war Paavo does not adapt to life in the city, but escapes to his homeland to the north and gets to work on a log site.
