A painter is in love with a girl he suspects to be a kept woman when he sees her in the arms of an old gentleman.

Two factory owners, Hiram Maxwell and Nicholas Harding are almost polar opposites -- Maxwell pays careful attention to his employees needs, while Harding totally disregards them. Not only does her father come back from the USA but Madame de Beaurenon also leaves her all her assets.
