The Sackbauer family unexpectedly inherits a villa with a large garden in a cottage district in Lower Austria. The villa itself is in acceptable condition, but the garden is less so. Mundl quickly sets about sprucing it up with garden gnomes, lanterns, and lots of love.

Returning from his imprisonment in Russia during the First World War, Franz Ferdinand Trotta, a young KuK officer, discovers how much the defeat has transformed Vienna and his people. He is stunned by the new order of things. Having lost his entire fortune and his wife, who is having a sapphic relationship with a Hungarian artist, he tries to regain his place in a world that appears devastated.

The story of a young man from Burgenland named Franz who works for an expanding construction company. The boss urgently needs workers and tries to tie Franz to his company by offering him a promotion to foreman. Franz is undecided. After some hesitation, however, he accepts an offer from a large construction company. Franz wants to start a family with his pregnant girlfriend Erna and build a house. She faints in an accident and Franz goes to find a doctor. The doctor is with the builder, who stands in the way of the desperate young man. Franz pushes the builder aside and injures his arm in the process. Franz is then reported to the police and brought to court. He gets caught up in the wheels of justice and ends up in prison. Erika Kohut, a sexually repressed piano teacher living with her domineering mother, meets a young man who starts romantically pursuing her.

A faithful family has gathered around "Mundl": his wife Toni, who says little but always has the last word; his son Karli, who marries Irmi, a woman from "higher circles", and his parents-in-law, the Werners, who have some difficulty in getting accustomed to the coarse tones of the Sackbauer family. Then Mundl's daughter Hanni brings home a bespectacled intellectual, of all people, and altogether, everyday life in Vienna can be rather exciting.
