The year is 1943 and Taiwan is under Japanese colonization. After finishing his studies in Japan, famous Taiwanese sculptor and painter Ching-Cheng Huang receives an offer to teach in Beiping Art School. He decides to visit friends and family back home before leaving for China. He boards the passenger liner "Takachiho Maru" in Kobe, Japan, with his girlfriend, a pianist. Tragically, the luxurious liner is torpedoed by an American submarine and sinks off the coast of Keelung, Taiwan. Decades later, Shou-shou, a fine art restorer with a crippling illness, finds one of Huang's paintings in an exhibition. As she restores the painting, Shou-shou learns about the artist, the stories behind his work and his death at sea. She recreates the story of the painting "Woman in Black", and romantically imagines the ways the artist painted his girlfriend. In his 40s, sculptor JU Ming had already made his name in the early 80s art scene in Taiwan. He then decided to pursue opportunities in New York. During then, HUANG Yu-shan made her first documentary with JU Ming as the subject when she studied at New York University. The film contains footage of JU knocking and carving in his studio and interviews with gallery managers, art critics, and sculptors. This film brings together two New York experiences from two Taiwanese/Asian “exhibitors” who respectively experienced documentary filmmaking and sculpting in the city.

The Petrel Returns is the story about the pioneer of Taiwan modern dancer Ms. Tsai Ruiyue, who was born in Tainan, and had been educated in Japan. After she came back from Japan, she had met the famous poet Mr. Lei Shiyu, soon they were engaged and married while Ms. Tsai Ruiyue had decided to devoted her life to dance art and education.She has founded the first dance theater: Chung Hua Dance Theater which has encouraged many potential Taiwanese dancers after WWII.
