Popular guitarist Shunsuke Sugi had a busy schedule and lived a puppet life with manager Yoko Ohara. On the way home from the Tohoku tour, he rescued Akiko, a girl who had passed out in a car accident. Ahead of him was the bustle of Tokyo. He suddenly met Akiko during a noisy party with friends. He tried to persuade Akiko, who wanted to become a singer, to return to the village, but it didn't work. One day he invited Akiko to play in Yokohama. When they returned to childhood and talked about their dreams, they felt love for the first time. Meanwhile, returning home, Yoko turned her jealousy on the two of them, and announced the death of Shunsuke's mother...

With the object of discovering the male accomplice of Hideko, a bad girl, Michiko, a police-woman, disguises herself and infiltrates a gang. Then in a reformatory, under the name of Suzuko, she finds a certain girl who is familiar with Hideko and from her she approaches a woman, named Keiko. One day, at a beer-hall, the police-woman meets Keiko who just finished a secret narcotics transaction and asks her about Hideko. However, with the sudden appearance of Saburo, one of the gang, her search fails, and an exciting pursuit begins. Later Keiko is found dead.

During the naval battle of Midway in WWII, the battleship Mutsu was in its home port in Japan. The ship's officers and crew were frustrated at not being able to take part in the fighting. They had been held back by orders from the Naval Ministry, but there was also a plot by saboteurs, who were trying to prevent the sailing of the Mutsu. Director Komori developed a suspenseful plot by including a fictional adaptation of the Russian spy Richard Sorge, who had been captured in Japan and subsequently executed. Komori brings a fictional Russian spy to the screen by portraying him as a military attaché at the German embassy. As Germany was an ally of Japan in WWII, a secret agent being a mole in the German embassy is a perfect cover. The interaction of the saboteurs and the officers and crew of the Mutsu make an exciting story.

Famous for his coin tossing when capturing criminals, an Edo detective, Heiji, launches an investigation into the mysterious murder of his friend Seigoro.

For the poor, Edo is Hell on Earth, starving under the rule of Tanuma Okitsugi, corrupt councilor to the shogun. But the courageous vagabond called “Kageboshi” (Shadow Avenger), will fight for the common folk, robbing the rich so the people will have rice. In 1941, overpopulated Japan faces an economic boycott and its armed forces push further to the south. And despite negotiations between Japan and the U. S. A. war is declared with the attack on Pearl Harbour. Victories follow for Japan on land and sea and her forces push forward to the borders of India. But gradually the tide turns in favour of the Allies and after the atom bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan is compelled to accept the Potsdam Declaration and by the order of the Emperor agrees to unconditional surrender. Under the supervision of the occupation forces the International Military Tribunal opens in Tokyo to try the Japanese war leaders. Established in the cause of justice, and to prevent future aggressive wars the trials drag on for two and a half years. And on December 23, 1948, General Tojo and six other war leaders mount the thirteen steps to the gallows at Tokyo's Sugamo prison.

Mototsugu is the younger son of Akira Sakawa, a director of an advertising agency whose mother, Nobuko, is ill with cancer of the liver. Yutaro Kida, a worker at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal, volunteers for the navy but finds himself a cook's mate in the galley of a gunboat. But his dream is eventually realized when he is transferred to the new and powerful destroyer Yukikaze which he helped to build. When the Pacific War breaks out Yukikaze performs valiantly in the South Pacific, and while on shore leave, Kida meets and falls in love with Yukiko, younger sister of his commander.

Natsue, Kenichi's estranged no-good mother, returns wanting to take part in the boy's upbringing. And shortly thereafter, a mysterious stranger arrives in town to lay claim on Bungo's life...
