And only when Varya sees mom without hair, her life priorities fall in place. Actions speak louder than words. In order to support her dear mother, Varya shaves her head.

However, they somehow keep their spirits up and try to enjoy this last walk together. They both know that this is the very last of the ‘grand days’ of their lives.

The father fought and died in the ranks of the Red Army, the mother worked as a secretary for the Union of Ukrainian Women (the largest women's organization in Galicia), and 16-year-old Mykhailo was a staunch supporter of anti-Soviet propaganda, for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
