During the early War of Resistance Against Japan in Baiyangdian, Hebei, the Yanling Squad, led by Communist Party member Hei Lao Cai, conducted effective guerrilla warfare. Yang Xiaomei, fleeing abuse from her husband Zhang Jinlong, joined the squad and developed feelings for farmer Niu Dashi. Zhang Jinlong, unable to change, defected to the Japanese. As Japanese sweep operations intensified, Xiaomei, Dashi, and Zhang Jinlong faced different paths in the conflict.

In Liujiajiao Village, a border area in Shanxi, during the Anti-Japanese War, Xiao Erhei attempts to marry Xiaoqin, despite opposition from various conniving locals.

After the major campaigns, the Liberation War’s focus shifted to the northwest. Hu Zongnan retreated south, and Fang Zhiqiao led his remnants to Mount Hua, known for its rugged terrain. Fang deployed forces at key passes, but a military intelligence officer, with herbalist Chang Shenglin’s help, cut off enemy communication by reaching the North Peak. A political offensive led to the surrender of the enemy at Qianshi Zhuang, controlling all passages between the North and West Peaks. Trapped, Fang Zhiqiao’s troops, with shattered morale, launched a futile counterattack, leading to his despairing lament.

With the fishermen's life on the southeastern coast in the early 1960s as its background, the film depicts a group of militia women who work both as fisher women and fighters defending their homes and the motherland.

The enemy tried a fake negotiation to delay time. At night, Cai Dage brought reinforcements, eliminating the enemy on the island and their rescue ship.

"Toward a New China" tells the story of Chang Weiliang, a metallurgical engineer studying in the United States who was shattered in 1945 under the rule of the Kuomintang. His ideal of industrial salvation was shattered. After liberation, he saw that technicians were not respected. He was unhappy, not active, and could not see the power of the working class. Military representatives helped him raise his awareness. On October 1, 1949, New China was founded, and Engineer Chang and the workers became the masters of New China.
