Nurse Sinikka wants to help a prisoner who crosses the border from the Soviet Union. She and her fiancé plan a flight via Finland with the help of her mother. Ruth the girlfriend of Sinikka's brother happens to witness the escape, which puts them all in danger.

The story of the first elections in Finland. Farmer Topi Romppainen lives a modest life with his family in Kainuu in the early 20th century. While shopping in the village, Topi hears about the upcoming parliamentary elections. His wife Riikka decides to find out more and ends up at a meeting of the Social Democrats.

In this story, which focuses on the events of a single evening, Kaarlo Kaarila, a dedicated chief physician, discovers that his wife Irja is having an affair with Dr. Alec von Wentell.
