In the city of São Paulo, the routine of gravedigger apprentice Deodato changes when a new working girl arrives at the cemetery. Together, they must re-register the abandoned tombs, but strange events make the apprentice wonder about the consequences of messing with the dead.

After leaving her daughter Jessica in a small town in Pernambuco to be raised by relatives, Val spends the next 13 years working as a nanny to Fabinho in São Paulo. She has financial stability but has to live with the guilt of having not raised Jessica herself. As Fabinho’s university entrance exams approach, Jessica reappears in her life and seems to want to give her mother a second chance. However, Jessica has not been raised to be a servant and her very existence will turn Val’s routine on its head. Young gravedigger apprentice Deodato's job is at risk. The other gravediggers doubt his ability to do the work. His uncle Jaca tries to make him appreciate the job, but it's useless: the work distresses Deodato, who has artistic aspirations. He prefers to play the church organ in secret and wander around the cemetery writing poems. After fainting during one of the burials, he is called to the office, where he is confronted by Aloizio, the cemetery administrator...

A pawn shop proprietor buys used goods from desperate locals – as much to play perverse power games as for his own livelihood, but when the perfect rump and a backed-up toilet enter his life, he loses all control.
