An endearing outlier, Brian lives alone in a Welsh valley, inventing oddball contraptions that seldom work. After finding a discarded mannequin head, Brian gets an idea. Three days, a washing machine, and sundry spare parts later, he’s invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and proves a charming, cheeky companion. The narrative unfolds in the 14th Century, when the European nations vie for supremacy within the Holy Roman Empire. The ambitious Austrian Empire, desiring more land, invades neighbouring Switzerland, a serene and pastoral nation. Protagonist William Tell, a formerly peaceful hunter, finds himself forced to take action as his family and homeland come under threat from the oppressive Austrian King and his ruthless warlords.

Poland is under Communist rule. An exiled Polish theater director is in England, enthusiastically preparing an abstract play which will criticize the authoritarian Polish government. His sons might not share his political views, though.

In the late 21st century, planet Earth is suffering. Deep under Stonehenge lies a giant crystal - our world's Sentinel, which regulates the conditions for life. Throughtout the universe are many such Sentinels, each relaying information in the cosmic network of stability. But the relay point for ours is malfunctioning. This will have catastrophic results, as the Sentinel loses control, creating tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes - even the ozone layer will dissipate. In the next decade, the Earth will cease to support life of any description. The Sentinel is aware of its plight, and reaches out to archaeologist Professor Caldeon, who in turn convinces former UN advisor Jason Havlin something must be done. Together they form a team who will explore both the Earth and the Universe in an array of hi-tech vehicles, battling natural disasters, and hoping against hope they can save the planet...
