A boat trip in the Helsinki archipelago: images of water, light and people on the cruise. Work and aspirations are important and encouraging to them. They all seem to have something personal to say about their time, their views and their imaginations.

Vuokko takes shelter from a thunderstorm in a fishing hut and meets a mysterious man whom she suspects is the smuggler Rompan Eetu. Instead of reporting him, Vuokko decides to follow him to Helsinki to the smugglers' hideout on the condition that he agrees to turn himself and his comrades in to the police.

Architect Matti picks up Ritva and her young son while on a business trip. When the car runs out of gas, the travelers are forced to spend the night at a guesthouse, pretending to be a married couple. During the night, Ritva runs away, leaving the child in Matti's care. Matti tries to cope with looking after the child and keeps it a secret from his wife Maija.

Irmeli worships the memory of her deceased composer father, but falls in love with her mother Ruuti's new fiancé, Dr. Hallamaa. Unhappy love depresses Irmeli, and she tries to run away to Sweden. Antti, an engineering student who lives as a tenant in the family's home, sets off after Irmeli to bring her back home.

Bank clerk Aarno Harjus is dismissed from his job due to false criminal allegations, and at the same time his wife leaves him. With the help of his friend, Detective Inspector Erä, Harjus gets the opportunity to appear on the radio under the pseudonym Con Amore.
