The Padre reads him an interesting history of Fr. Bartolomeo. founder of the Mission, and of how the painting came to be discovered in Lost River, for it had been thrown there by a monk when the Mission was attacked by the Indians, owing to the abduction of the Chief's daughter by a villainous Spaniard. Tom takes the painting to New York where he sells it and gives the money to the wife of Tom, who has been too poor to bring her and the baby to Arizona.

She makes an investigation which starts from a particular chord played at the grand organ. They find that certain keys cause a secret door in the organ to open, revealing a secret passage to a family tomb.

Impersonating expert safe-cracker Velvet Mary, Nora helps the crooks to break into the bank, but upon opening the safe, she sounds the alarm, and the crooks are arrested. Having learned his lesson, James proposes to Nora, who never again is forced to go hungry.

    Hector, who was reared by a maiden aunt, decides to leave his sheltered life and become a reporter. At the newspaper where he has works, Hector becomes friendly with a young female reporter, who uses the byline "Firefly" for a series of articles intended to expose a notorious café. At the same time, Hector's aunt, head of the local Purity League, gives a stirring speech to the membership about ridding their community of the café. The young woman enlists Hector's aid and together they gain enough evidence to close the café.

Jack eventually exposes the doctor as a charlatan, revealing Dehli's plans to hypnotize Rae's aunt and force her to disinherit the girl. Jack also rounds up the crooks who worked with Dehli, winning for himself the love of Rae and the gratitude of her aunt.

Dick and Dorothy's second attempt to elope is foiled by Allen, and Dick lands in jail. He escapes, and a fight with Allen leaves Dick as sole contender for Dorothy. Allen is caught for misusing the mails, and Dick receives John Travers' blessing. The hero's athletic stunts are featured.
