At the beginning is a suicide attempt by sculptor Jiří Malek, which is foiled by a thief hidden in his apartment. Malek is thirty-five, divorced, caring for his five-year-old son, and the reason he turned on the gas in his studio is, of course, his wife. Mr. Karas, who takes care of Málka's household, tries to get rid of his gloomy mood by using alcohol. But after Jiří insults the old man and they break up badly, Málka's older brother Oldřich decides to find a woman who would be a good wife to Jiří, a mother to little Martin and a good friend to him. She should be pretty, intelligent, understanding, love children and be able to cook, wash and clean. To avoid any mistake, Oldrich will draw up a test, the results of which should decide. Without suspecting that he is undergoing an important test, a number of potential sisters-in-law find themselves in the studio - Edita, a radio editor, Martina, a nurse, Pavla, a student, and others...

The pre-Christmas period in a household with four small, temperamental children creates a comedy in itself. But when problems with the password lock are added to the confusion, the fun is guaranteed. A busy father of a family buys one of these ingenious gadgets. This invention is supposed to make it impossible for his children to constantly search for Christmas presents. The tense atmosphere and the interplay of random circumstances mean that even trivial problems begin to take on completely different dimensions in the mother's eyes. The previously trusting wife interprets her husband's chess training, mysterious phone calls.... And to make matters worse, the father forgets the password to the lock. Everything culminates when the wife discovers a present under the tree that was probably intended for another woman. However, the mysteries are not solved until New Year's Eve, when - surprise surprise - the mother-in-law intervenes in the story.

Why? (Czech: Proč?) is a 1987 Czechoslovak drama film directed by Karel Smyczek. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. The film deals with the hooliganism in Czechoslovakia, particularly with the fans of football club Sparta from Prague, whose supporters were the pioneers of the football fan riots in Czechoslovakia, starting with hooligan actions already in the 1960s, like breaking the trains in which they travelled when they went on Sparta's away games. LISTOPAD is a tale about the adventures of three teenage boys who become swept up in the 'Velvet Revolution' of 1989.

There are still water spirits among us. One group lives in Prague, led by Mr. Wassermann, who is using his wife's family as a servants. All they need is their old house near the river. But the house is to be demolished. They have to stop it. And the only way is to drown Dr. Mrácek, who is responsible for the demolition. But he falls in love with Wassermann's niece Jana. He changes to fish, is mistaken for water spirit from Germany, is drowned and revived again. The other problem is the flour with ears... and so on...

Marta Dekasová works as a governess in a garrison town. The beautiful girl is the center of attention of many men, but she only desires Lieutenant Varga, who is married and rejects her. The small group of actors have to face many problems while preparing a new performance.

Honza and Zuzana are very young husband and wife. They have a little daughter of whom willingly occasionally take care the grandparents and Honza's fifteen-year-old brother Martin. Zuzana continues studying and Honza devotes all weekends as an amateur competitor to the motor-cycles at the speedway. Zuzana is not interested in motor-cycles. Martin holds responsible for his brother's marriage and at the advice of his friend Magda, who is of the same age, invites her sister-in-law to the club of Hucul horses so that she does not feel bored. But by misfortunes and unexplained quarrels both young husband and wife start being jealous of one another.

Tram driver Marie has far too much to do after her shift is over. But she likes to do it all since she loves her husband Václav sincerely. One day she spots him on the Lesser Town Square in Prague, kissing an attractive blonde good-bye.
